PM Erdogan must answer to fears about Turkish policy: EU Parl.

BRUSSELS: Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will face tough questioning from GUE/NGL group President Gabi Zimmer later today as the Turkish leader's Brussels charm offensive takes him to the European Parliament. Zimmer will raise several key issues with Erdogan, focusing on worrying signs of political repression in Turkey and instability in the region.

"A lot of disturbing signs came out of Turkey in 2013 so we need assurances from Erdogan that there will be a change in tack from his government. Since last summer's mass protests against plans to build over Gezi Park in Istanbul, Turkey has seen a heavy-handed crackdown on protestors. Turkey also imprisoned 27 journalists in 2013, that's more than both China and Iran. This, and the on-going pressure on the judiciary in the country, is serious cause for concern that I will broach this afternoon with the Prime Minister."

Gabi Zimmer will tell PM Erdogan that any escalation of the conflict in Syria will just increase the suffering of the Syrian people. "Militant groups increase their influence under such conditions, while those who stand for peaceful and political solutions will be side-lined. We must support non-violence as the only way forward."

On the Cyprus issue, Zimmer's message will reiterate the GUE/NGL position in favour of a solution based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation according to United Nations resolutions. "Turkey is clearly in violation of the principles of international law, the UN Charter, and the rights of the Cypriot people. Today I will stress that a possible return of Famagusta to its inhabitants would be a decisive step towards a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem."

The peace process with the Kurds will also figure among the topics for discussion, with Zimmer set to emphasise the urgent need for constitutional reform. "None of the key Kurdish demands - Kurdish language education in public schools, the release of political prisoners and the introduction of a fair electoral threshold to enable parliamentary pluralism - are being dealt with by Ankara. The progress made so far in the peace process can only be brought to a successful conclusion if both sides make the necessary effort," she concluded.

Blast on bus kills 22 Shia pilgrims in Mastung

QUETTA: At least 22 people were killed and dozens injured Tuesday when a powerful explosion ripped through a bus carrying Shia pilgrims in Balochistan's militancy-hit Mastung district.

The bus was coming from the Pakistan-Iran border at Taftan when it was attacked in Dringhar area, on the main Quetta-Taftan Highway in Mastung district, some 50 kilometres southwest of Quetta.

Shafqat Anwar, the Assistant Commissioner in Mastung, said the bus caught fire after the blast. Anwar added that at least 32 people were injured, which included 24 men and eight women.

Provincial Home Secretary Asadur Rehman Gilani said that two buses had been traveling together with security vehicles provided by the government and that the bomb struck one of the buses.

“Two vehicles of forces escorting the pilgrim’s buses were also damaged in the blast,” he said.

Gilani said investigators believed around 80 kilograms of explosives were used in the explosion, though it was not immediately clear what type of bomb was used or whether it was a suicide attack.

“Our priority is to shift the injured to hospitals,” he said, adding that women and children were also among the dead and injured.

Most of the injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospital for medical treatment, he added.

Emergency was imposed in hospitals to treat the injured.

Banned militant group Lashkar-i-Jhangvi has claimed responsibility for the bombing.

Chief Minister Balochistan, Dr Malik Baloch condemned the attack on the pilgrims' bus and ordered inquiry into the incident.

This incident comes only 20 days after an explosives-laden vehicle targeted a passenger bus carrying Shia pilgrims in Hazar Ganji area of Quetta, killing at one and injuring 34 others. The banned militant outfit Jaish al Islam had claimed responsibility for the attack on January 1.

'Anarchist' Delhi chief minister calls off sit-in protest

NEW DELHI: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday called off his sit-in protest demanding police reforms that has seen him run the city from a pavement for the last two days.

Kejriwal told a crowd that two policemen he wanted suspended for misconduct would be sent on leave, but he failed to secure his main demand that the city's police force be put under his government's control.

He said that the lieutenant-governor of Delhi, an appointee of the central government, had appealed to him to end his protest, which turned violent on Tuesday.

“After the lieutenant governor's appeal, we all have decided to end our protest here today,” Kejriwal told a crowd of cheering supporters after dark on Tuesday.

“I'm very happy today. Today the people of Delhi have won. I want to congratulate the people of Delhi,” he added.

Kejriwal, an anti-corruption campaigner who swept to power last month, declared himself an “anarchist” on Monday and called a mass demonstration to disrupt Republic Day celebrations at the weekend.

Overnight, the 44-year-old slept outside on a pavement under a thick blanket, awakening to rains and strong winds.

His central demand was that the Delhi police, widely viewed as corrupt and inefficient, be transferred to his state government's control from the national home ministry.

As with other demands in the past by different chief ministers, the central government refused to agree because of Delhi's status as the national capital.

Kejriwal says the police, the focus of public fury after the fatal gang-rape of a student in December 2012, have failed to prevent crimes against women.

“We are committed to ensuring the security for women in Delhi. If any woman in Delhi is attacked, we will not sit quiet, we will raise our voice,” he said Tuesday night.

Critics immediately branded his move a U-turn as Kejriwal had originally demanded the suspension of some five officials in total over recent crimes, according to the Press Trust of India.

“A climb down for CM (chief minister) of Delhi!” Kiran Bedi, a former high-ranking police officer and previously an anti-graft colleague of Kejriwal, tweeted.

Arun Jaitley, a senior leader of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party, called it a “theatre of absurd”.

Clashes broke out Tuesday between riot police armed with batons and dozens of supporters of Kejriwal when they were prevented from joining his sit-in protest.

Aides brought him files for the administration of the city of 17 million people as he sat with other members of the cabinet at the protest site, near the high-security area that houses the parliament and the presidency building.

He had warned earlier Tuesday that he would escalate the demonstration and was prepared to sit indefinitely.

Thanks to barricaded roads leading to the protest that caused traffic chaos and forced the closure of nearby subway stations, #AAPdrama and “Arvind Kejriwal” turned into top trending Twitter topics in India.

Kejriwal was sworn in as chief minister of the city of 17 million last month after his new Aam Aadmi (Common Man) Party made sensational gains in state elections against India's two biggest parties.

He plans to shake up national elections due before May by once again taking on the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP.

But after enjoying overwhelmingly positive media coverage and support from the poor and middle-class, there are signs his latest campaign has backfired and the honeymoon is over.

“Anarchist CM Plunges Delhi Into Chaos,” read the front-page of the Hindu newspaper Tuesday morning, while the Economic Times headlined “Kejriwal Reduces Govt to a Chaotic Street Play”.

Kejriwal, a former tax official, rejected criticism that he was failing to govern responsibly, and was instead relying on grassroots tactics.

“Some people say I'm not working, that the Delhi government is not working. We are here to support women's safety which is an important issue,” he said during the day.

Baghdad bomb blasts kill 26; Iraqi troops fight Sunni militants

BAGHDAD: Seven bomb explosions killed 26 people and wounded 67 in the Iraqi capital on Monday, police and medics said, as security forces battled Sunni Muslim militants around the western cities of Falluja and Ramadi.

The bloodiest attack occurred in the mainly Shia Muslim Abu Dsheer district in southern Baghdad, where a car bomb near a crowded market killed seven people and wounded 18.

No group claimed responsibility for the blasts. But Sunni insurgents, some of them linked to Al Qaeda, are widely blamed for a surge in violence in the past year apparently aimed at undermining the Shia-led government and provoking a return to all-out sectarian strife.

Al Qaeda militants and their local allies seized control of Falluja and parts of Ramadi on Jan 1, exploiting resentment among minority Sunnis against the government for policies perceived as unfairly penalising their once-dominant community.

Five of Monday's bombs targeted mainly Shia districts of the capital, while two were in mostly Sunni areas.

Sporadic fighting again flared around Falluja and Ramadi.

Anti-government tribesmen attacked an army barracks in Saqlawiya, 10 km (six miles) northwest of Falluja, and destroyed two Humvee vehicles, before army helicopter gunships forced them to retreat.

One of the attackers was killed and two wounded, police said. There was no word on casualties among the army.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, who faces a parliamentary election on April 30, has ruled out a full-scale army assault on Falluja, urging tribesmen to drive Al Qaeda militants from the city, where US troops occupying Iraq fought some of their toughest battles with Sunni insurgents in 2004.

An Iraqi journalist, Firas Mohammed, was killed by a roadside bomb that exploded near a police station in Khaldiya, a town between Falluja and Ramadi, on Sunday, police said. He had worked for the local television channel in Falluja.

Ten journalists were killed in Iraq last year, the highest number anywhere except Syria, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.

UN withdrew Syria talks invite 'under pressure': Iran

TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Tuesday the United Nations had abruptly withdrawn Tehran's last-minute invitation to highly anticipated peace talks on Syria “under pressure”.

“We regret that Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has withdrawn the invitation under pressure,” Zarif told reporters in Ashgabat before flying back to Tehran, the ISNA news agency reported.

Ban withdrew the invitation to Iran, the Damascus regime's main regional ally, less than 24 hours after it was issued despite reservations from the United States and Syrian opposition groups.

Iran refuses to consent to a transitional government in Syria, which was agreed in the first international gathering in June 2012 to end the deadly civil war.

“I made it clear in numerous phone conversations with the secretary general that Iran does not accept any preconditions to attend the talks,” Zarif said.

“It is also regretful that Mr Ban does not have the courage to provide the real reasons for the withdrawal,” he said, claiming that “Iran was not too keen on attending in the first place”.

Zarif added that had Tehran been represented, he would have sent his deputy because “the proper time to invite a foreign minister had already passed”.

Pakistan claims historic Test victory against Sri Lanka

Sharja: Set a daunting 302 to win in a possible 59 overs, Pakistan owed their successful chase to Ali's fifth Test century (103) as he and Misbah-ul-Haq shared a 109-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Misbah, who finished with 68 not out, hit the winning single with nine balls to spare in fading light.

Ali, ironically dropped for the first two Tests, hit paceman Suranga Lakmal for a boundary, then twice took two to reach his hundred off 133 balls.

He hit six boundaries before falling caught behind with just seven still needed to win.

Pakistan's chances seemed to have faded away at 107-3 at tea, as they needed 195 in the last 35 overs. But Ali upped the tempo during a rapid 89-run partnership in 14.5 overs with Sarfraz Ahmed (48) which left Sri Lanka on the defensive.

Even when Sarfraz was out, caught behind off paceman Shaminda Eranga, Pakistan needed 116. Sarfraz hit four boundaries and a six off 46 balls.

But Misbah supported Ali as Pakistan achieved their second best chase in all Test cricket, behind the 314 they chased against Australia in Karachi in 1994.

Sri Lanka had won the second Test in Dubai by nine wickets while the first Test ended in a draw in Abu Dhabi.

US spies to remain 'interested' in foreign govts: Obama

BERLIN, Germany, Jan 19, 2014 (AFP) - The US intelligence service will continue to spy on foreign governments, President Barack Obama said in an interview broadcast Saturday, although he assured Chancellor Angela Merkel that he would not let intrusive surveillance harm their relationship.

The frank admission comes a day after Obama curtailed the reach of mass US National Security Agency phone surveillance sweeps, but said bulk collection of data would go on to protect America from terrorists.

In Friday's long-awaited speech aimed at quelling international furore over the widespread eavesdropping revealed by Edward Snowden, Obama also said he had halted spy taps on friendly world leaders.

But Obama told German television ZDF's heute-journal that intelligence gathering on foreign governments will continue.

"Our intelligence agencies, like German intelligence agencies, and every intelligence agency out there, will continue to be interested in the government intentions of countries around the world. That's not going to change," he told heute-journal.

"And there is no point in having an intelligence service if you are restricted to the things that you can read in the New York Times or Der Spiegel.

"The truth of the matter is that by definition the job of intelligence is to find out: Well, what are folks thinking? What are they doing?", he said.

Nevertheless, Obama said he would not allow the surveillance to harm his relationship of "friendship and trust" with Merkel.

"I don't need and I don't want to harm that relationship by a surveillance mechanism that somehow would impede the kind of communication and trust that we have," he said.

"And so what I can say is: as long as I'm president of the United States, the chancellor of Germany will not have to worry about this," he added.

Obama pledged on Friday that his country's National Security Agency (NSA) would not routinely spy on leaders of America's closest allies, following global outrage at revelations of massive electronic eavesdropping.

Germany has been incensed to learn that the NSA was carrying out widespread spying, including listening in on Merkel's mobile phone conversations.

The NSA allegations were especially damaging in Germany due to sensitivity over mass state spying on citizens by the Stasi secret police in the former communist East.

Norbert Roettgen, head of the Bundestag's foreign affairs committee and a member of Merkel's CDU party, said Obama's comments were "technical" and didn't respond to "the real problem" of "transatlantic divergence" on matters of security and freedoms.

Germany's confidence in Washington will not be restored unless "we sign an accord to protect, in a way that is judicially binding, the data of all citizens," German Justice Minister Heiko Maas said in comments run by the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Sunday.

Efforts by Berlin to introduce a "no-spy agreement" with the US have so far fallen on deaf ears.

Obama is scheduled to visit Brussels on March 26 for an EU-US summit when the issue is likely to be broached by his European counterparts.

The European Union said Friday that Obama's commitment to reform phone data collection was a step in the right direction, but called on the US president to enshrine the pledge in law.

"I agree with President Obama: More work will be needed in future. I look forward to seeing these commitments followed by legislative action," said EU Justice Commissioner Viviane Reding

Army to investigate Bannu attack: Ch Nisar

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar stated that the government has decided to have the army investigate the terrorist attack in Bannu that took place Sunday martyring 20 soldiers while injuring 30.
According to reports, the interior minister asked the reporters to shut down the cameras, following which, he spoke to the media informally saying that a large quantity of ammunition was used in the attack. He added that the capacity of the security institutions needs to be raised.
Confirming Dunya News’ report about the national security policy, Ch Nisar said that the policy will be presented to the national cabinet on Monday.
The minister said that the Rapid Response Force will act on the intelligence they receive and that the air wing of interior ministry is also being handed over to the Rapid Response Force. Federal minister went on to say that the political forces should not do ‘point scoring’ on the matter of negotiating with Taliban. Instead of point-scoring, prevent the nation from the state of chaos, he pleaded.
Earlier today, the attack on security forces convoy claimed the lives of 20 soldiers and injured 30.
The preliminary report of the attack suggested that the explosives were planted in the cylinder of a private vehicle that was hired for transporting the supplies.
Reportedly, Frontier Corps personnel were present at the cantonment ready to go with the convoy to deliver supplies to Miran Shah as a matter of routine and suddenly one of the vehicles exploded. The intensity of the blast shook the whole city. According to sources, the vehicle was blown using a remote control that resulted in destruction of several vehicles and injuries of dozens of personnel present at the time. At least 40 vehicles were present at the time of explosion.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain, former president Asif Ali Zardari, MQM chief Altaf Hussain, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Pervez Khattak, Jamaat Islami chief Syed Munnawar Hassan and Sunni Ittehad Council chief Hamid Raza have strongly condemned the attack.
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Shahidullah Shahid, while claiming the responsibility, said that the attacks on security forces will increase in the coming days.
Bannu has been the site of several attacks targeting security forces in the past.
Pakistani troops have been fighting for years against homegrown insurgents in the tribal belt, which the US considers the main hub of Taliban and Al-Qaeda militants plotting attacks on the West and in Afghanistan.

Iranian President Rouhani likely to attend World Economic Forum

GENEVA (AFP) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and some 40 other world leaders will gather at the World Economic Forum next week to discuss Syria s bloody civil war and the sluggish world economy.

The annual gathering of the global political, business, academic and civil society elite at the swank Swiss ski resort Davos will aim to provide "a mirror of the world as it is", WEF chairman Klaus Schwab told reporters.

The January 22-25 event, which kicks off on the same day as an international peace conference for Syria elsewhere in Switzerland, will count fewer world leaders than last year.

More than 40 heads of state and government are nonetheless set to figure among the some 2,500 participants who will descend on the picturesque mountain resort to discuss and debate a wide range of issues including the causes of conflicts plaguing the Middle East, and how to reinvigorate the global economy.

The forum s aim is ambitious: Schwab said it would "look for solutions for the really fundamental issues" -- the ones that pose questions about "our whole destiny as mankind".

Faced with a world "still much too much caught in a crisis-management mode", Schwab said the forum hoped "to push the reset button".

Participants expected from the crisis-ridden Middle East include Rouhani as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Shimon Peres of Iran s arch-enemy Israel.

Rouhani, whose country has controversially not been invited to take part in the Syria peace conference in Montreux, near Geneva, next Wednesday, is scheduled to participate in a debate in Davos the next day entitled "Iran in the World".

George Sabra, the head of Syria s main opposition National Council, is scheduled to be in Davos, as is Palestinian deputy prime minister Mohammed Mustafa and a large Egyptian delegation headed by interim prime minister Hazem el-Beblawi.

From outside the region, British Prime Minister David Cameron and his Japanese and Australian counterparts Shinzo Abe and Tony Abbot are expected at Davos.

Brazilian President Dilma Roussef and her Mexican, South Korean and Myanmar counterparts Enrique Pena Nieto, Park Geun-Hye and U Thein Sein are also scheduled to come.

Neither the United States, China, Russia nor France will be represented at such a high level, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who had been expected to attend, has had to cancel after suffering a skiing injury.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who will host the Syria conference in Montreux, will travel afterwards to Davos to address the issue of climate change, another issue figuring high on the agenda this year.

"Half of the total population of Syrian people, nearly 9.3 million individuals urgently need humanitarian aid," Ban said, pointing out that more than three million people have fled.

"When we met a year ago, four million Syrians needed aid ... A year later, we face a regional crisis and a humanitarian crisis," Ban said.

Kashmir Council EU to hold demonstration on Indian Republic Day

Brussels:(PR) Kashmir Council EU would hold a protest demonstration on the occasion of Indian Republic Day (26th Jan) in front of Indian Embassy in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.

A meeting of the council which was presided by the Council’s Chairman Ali Raza Syed in Brussels decided that the council would observed the Indian Republic Day falling on 26th January as black day and the peaceful demonstrators in front of Indian Mission would demand New Delhi to give right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

The peaceful demonstration would begin from 10:30am on 26th January at 217, Chaussee de Vleurgat 1050 Brussels and a protest memorandum may also be handed over to the officials of the embassy.

In a statement issued at the conclusion of the meeting, Ali Raza Syed said, Indian claims for being largest democracy of the world but it refuses the democratic rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir as atrocities against the people are continued. He said, peace in Kashmir is connected to the whole region. If Kashmir is witness of peace, the whole region would be witness of peace and prosperity.

Chairman Kashmir Council EU Ali Raza Syed said that Kashmiri nation is not ready to compromise on their right to self determination.

On the Indian, republic day, we simply want to convey a message to Indian state and government that there is no point in glorifying the democracy if people are living in misery under the might of the gun. If democracy is all about the individual’s rights and freedom, then I must remind the Indian state that a nation is clamouring for its right to live in dignity, its right to decide about its future, its right to rule and above all, its right to freedom. Needless to say, the so-called “biggest” democracy of the world, India is ruthlessly suppressing these rights and continuously killing the innocent Kashmiri people at will.

If democracy is all about justice, then I must say that our fellow Kashmiris are not getting the justice even after six decades.

He said, at this moment, I salute the brave and committed struggle of our brothers and sisters in the held Kashmir fighting peacefully.

The Kashmir Council’s press release also announced that Kashmir Council EU would organised ‘Solidarity Day’ on 5th February with the collaboration of other organisation particularly Kashmir Centre Holland in Brussels.

Bahraini Govt bans prayer in Al-Barbaghi mosque

MANAMA:The Saudi  supported regime in Bahrain has once again prevented citizens from praying in the Barbaghi historic mosque. The mosque is one of the 30 mosques that were demolished during the state of emergency following the 2011 uprising.
The Bahraini Regime has deliberately blocked citizens from reaching the site of the demolished mosque by besieging the area with barbed wires. The regime forces were heavily deployed to forcefully impose the authority's plan to relocate the mosque from its original place Activists say the relocation is part of attempts to uproot historic milestones. The relocation of the mosque is considered religiously unacceptable and against religious freedom that is guaranteed by international covenants.
Al-Barbaghi mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Bahrain and was built over 400 years ago. It contains a grave of an old Islamic Scholar which has also been destroyed by the regime.

This received a great deal of pushback from customers, especially after EA's servers couldn't handle demand during the first month. EA had to remove "non-essential features" from the game for the first few weeks, including the fastest simulation speed, just to handle demand, and players complained of waiting for hours just to sign in.

During that time, gaming sites reneged on glowing reviews for the game, and SimCity's Amazon review score dropped to one star. Reddit became one of the hubs for users to complain, and industrious modders there even claimed they found code in the game to play without an internet connection.

For EA's part, the company responded by giving players a free game on Origin for their troubles. Customers had their revenge by voting EA the worst company in America in aConsumer Reports poll.

Patrick Buechner, general manager of the Maxis' Emeryville studio, which is owned by EA, wrote in the blog post: "I’ve wanted to say those words for quite some time." He added the team was in the late stages of creating Single Player Mode, but still had to test and polish it before announcing a release date.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

8 Hiring Experts Reveal Their Favorite Interview

Interviews are often stressful, but being prepared never hurts. Below, eight hiring experts share the questions they love to ask in interviews.

Who do you most admire and why?
— Michael Yormark, President, the Florida Panthers and Sunrise Sports & Entertainment

"The answer reveals a lot about who the candidate is, who she aspires to be, and whether she has the DNA to be part of a company's culture. It will also force the interviewee to make a decision between brutal honesty and telling the interviewer what she believes he wants to hear."

In your last employee review, what areas for improvement were identified?
— Andrew Shapin, Chief Executive Officer, Long Tall Sally

"When candidates are honest, it illuminates self-awareness and potential weaknesses. It also helps ensure I get the best out of them. The response can easily be verified with the previous employer. I also ask what progress has been made."

Why are you here?
— Andrew Alexander, President, Red Roof Inn

"I always ask this the minute a prospect sits down. After the initial shock wears off, I hope to hear a passion for the hospitality industry and a deep respect for customer service. I find this to be a tremendously effective way to gauge whether the person is interested in working for us or simply seeking a job."

Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

4 dead in US helicopter crash over UK coast

NORFOLK:Four US Air Force personnel (USAF)have been killed after a US Pave Hawk military helicopter crashed in a nature reserve in north Norfolk. The USAF confirms.

There are fears the accident may have been caused by a bird strike at the village of Cley-next-to-the sea after it came down in an area popular with migrating birds.

A 400 metre cordon has been placed around the scene by emergency services amid reports the search and rescue helicopter may have been carrying limo ammunition.

The crash happened in the peaceful former port which lies not far from the RAF Lakenheath air base on the norfolk3Norfolk, Suffolk border.

The predominantly flat area is widely used by the military for training sorties with one resident claiming to have seen military helicopters flying just 200ft above the ground.

Local residents said there were many fire engines at the scene and police cars were in attendance at Cley and the village of Salthouse further down the coast.

South Korea halts tear gas exports to Bahrain

SEOUL:South Korea has halted teargas exports to Bahrain after rights groups launched a global campaign on social media aimed at putting pressure on the Gulf Kingdom's suppliers.

According to reports, South Korea's Defence Acquisition Program Administration has told two companies LondonProtestthat sought approval to export to Bahrain to suspend shipments.

It cited "unstable politics in the country [Bahrain], people's death due to tear gas and complaints from human rights groups".

The move follows a global campaign entitled "Stop the shipment" by Bahrain Watch and the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT) which denounced the use of teargas by Bahrain police to target protesters and other civilians during almost three years of uprising.

The campaign was supported by thousands of activists via email, Twitter and Facebook, and led to public demonstrations in London and Seoul.

A document leaked to Bahrain Watch, a UK-based advocacy group, revealed that Bahrain's Ministry of the Interior requested a shipment for the provision of 1.6m teargas projectiles, 90,000 teargas grenades and 145,000 stun grenades.

As John Lubbock remarked in a Vice article, that would leave the tiny island state with more of the weapons than its 1.3 million citizens.

Bahrain Watch named two South Korean firms, DaeKwang Chemical Company and Kore C.N.O. Tech, as suppliers of the future teargas shipment.

"It is a really important first step that South Korea has decided to refuse teargas export to Bahrain because of the regime," Sarah Waldron, core campaign coordinator at CAAT, told IBTimes UK. "It is an important precedent but there are other suppliers out there."

"We hope the UK government, which keeps supporting the Bahraini regime, will follow," she continued, adding that Downing Street is already "under pressure from MPs".

In November, the Foreign Affairs Committee called on the UK government to no longer ignore claims of hypocrisy over its relations with Gulf countries, notably Saudi Arabia and Bahrain.

The Bahraini government have maintained that teargas is a peaceful and necessary way to maintain order and disperse protesters, claiming it is used across the world – including the US and European countries.

However, rights group and Physicians for Human Rights reported that tear gas projectiles, which are hurled into houses, have caused as many as 39 deaths in the tiny Gulf kingdom.

Ex-MP of Bahraini Parliament demands immediate release of photojournalist

LONDON (Talha Ahad): Ex-MP of Bahraini Parliament,Mr.Jawad Farooz, has demanded the immediate release of award-winning photojournalist Ahmad Al Fardan, who has been held without charge in Bahrain since December 26,2013.
ahmadfareed-1Talking to Awaaz,He said, Ahmad Al Fardan , a highly respected journalist who has been arrested and detained under false and illegal pretenses and has done nothing to warrant such an action by the authorities in Bahrain " said ex-MP.
"His detention is a restriction of the freedom of journalism and media in Bahrain and undermines the provisions of the rights of journalists law, which provides a safe environment for press and media work in the country."
“I am deeply concerned and share the worries of his family that the conditions of Ahmad Al Fardan imprisonment might further damage his failing health,” he said further.
The photojournalist, who works for the Nurphoto, Demotex and Sipa photo agencies, was reportedly beaten when arrested at his home in the early hours.

He has been denied visits by his lawyer and family, but he has twice been allowed to phone them.

Mr Jawad Farooz is member of the Al Wefaq political party, the main opposition party in the Bahraini Parliament. He resigned from his office as members of Parliament in February 2011 in protest of the government crackdown on protestors, which has led to a number of deaths and other human rights violations.

On Monday an EP delegation visits Portugal, while on Thursday the employment committee organises a public hearing.

Umeå and Riga are Europe's Cultural Capitals for 2014

Brussels: Umeå is the first Swedish city to be awarded European Cultural Capital since Stockholm in 1998. Located more than 600 kilometres north of Stockholm, Umeå with its university and 34,000 students is at the forefront of Swedish research. The city’s aim for the year is to show Europeans northern Sweden and to increase cultural exchanges between Umeå and the rest of Europe.

In the early 70s, young journalism graduate Göran Färm, a Swedish member of the S&D group, found his first job in Umeå at the local newspaper. Initially concerned about “ending-up far from civilisation” he quickly realised there was much to see, experience and write about as a journalist in this vibrant city.

“Since then I have been back many times, especially to the university, its Science Park Uminova and most recently its artistic campus – a unique cluster of programmes and activities in the cultural field," he said. "It's very gratifying that much of this was done thanks to European cooperation and EU funding.”

Riga is the capital of Latvia and the largest city of the Baltic States. Its history goes back more than 800 years and each century has left its mark in the architecture of the city. Its central position in the Baltic Sea region makes the city an important cultural, industrial, commercial and financial centre.

Former  vice-mayor of Riga and MEP Inese Vaidere, a Latvian member of the EPP group, said: “Riga is a city where the modern and historical mix in Art Nouveau and modern architecture, works of contemporary artists and masterpieces of the great artists of the past. Riga's historical centre with its Art Nouveau architecture is listed as UNESCO World Heritage."

She stressed this year would be a very good time to visit the city: "In 2014 Riga will also become the centre of world’s choral music, as it will host the world’s largest choir competition - the World Choir games. Festivals like Museum night and White nights are very appreciated by the public. Riga also offers a multitude of cultural events for young people, a lot of them taking place in the creative districts around Kalnciema and Miera streets.”

Polish woman raped in India: police

NEW DELHI (AFP) - A Polish woman was drugged and raped as she travelled to the Indian capital with her two-year-daughter, police said Sunday, the latest in a string of sexual attacks on women in the country.

The woman, 33, and her daughter were travelling in a taxi from the city of Mathura where they live to New Delhi last Thursday when she was allegedly raped by the driver.

The driver drugged the woman at some point during the 150-kilometre (93-mile) journey and she was attacked after she passed out, Delhi police spokesman Rajan Bhagat told AFP.

The woman woke up on a bench outside a railway station in New Delhi with her toddler crying by her side, the officer said, adding that details of the attack were still unknown.

"It is still a bit unclear, but prima facie, it seems she sat (in the taxi) voluntarily. But yes, thereafter, in the car he drugged her using some spray... medical report has confirmed rape," he said.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, reported the incident to police who are searching for the driver, Bhagat said.

The woman, a devotee of the Hindu god Krishna, had been living in Mathura -- believed to be the birthplace of Krishna -- in Uttar Pradesh state for the past three years and worked in the cloth export business, he said.

She and her daughter had been waiting on a busy road in Mathura for a taxi to take them to the capital when the driver approached.

The January 2 incident comes barely a week after India marked the first anniversary of the death of a student who was gang-raped on a New Delhi bus in an attack that sent shockwaves across the nation.

The gang-rape triggered massive protests over the levels of violence against women, but in the last 12 months there have been several more cases of local and foreign woman being attacked.

A judge last month sentenced three Nepalese men to 20 years in jail for the gang-rape of a US tourist in June in the northern state of Himachal Pradesh.

Six men were sentenced to life in prison in July last year for the gang-rape and robbery of a 39-year-old Swiss woman cyclist who had been holidaying in the central state of Madhya Pradesh.

Pakistan look to spinners for win over Sri Lanka

DUBAI (AFP) - Pakistan are hoping for a wicket that takes turn to give their spinners an edge in the second Test against Sri Lanka starting Wednesday in Dubai.

Saeed Ajmal toiled for 49 wicketless overs in Sri Lanka s second innings in the drawn first Test in Abu Dhabi last week, as skipper Angelo Mathews hit a career best 157 not out.

His fighting knock helped Sri Lanka erase Pakistan s 179-run lead and set them a 302-run victory target. They finished on 158-2.

It was the first time in Ajmal s 31-Test career that the 36-year-old had bowled more than 17 overs in a second innings and finished wicketless.

Ajmal has taken 24 wickets at Dubai stadium, including seven against England which helped Pakistan inflict a 3-0 series defeat on the then-world number one team in 2012.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq is hoping his spinners get more help from the pitch in Dubai for the second of three Tests.

"It was a sort of a setback for both teams as regards spinners in Abu Dhabi, but I think the Dubai wicket will be different and spinners will get turn on the third day," he said.

Pakistan beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in Dubai on their way to a 1-0 series win in 2011.

In that game Ajmal took eight wickets and Abdul Rehman four.

Left-arm spinner Rehman is likely to replace fast bowler Rahat Ali, who went wicketless in the first Test.

Despite hundreds from Misbah and Younis Khan last week, Pakistan will also look to bolster their batting after they slumped from 329-4 to 383 all out in their first innings in Abu Dhabi.

"We need to work on our batting more as we should have got 450-odd runs on the board to have a big lead to put pressure on the opposition," said Misbah.

Pakistan have the option of replacing opener Khurram Manzoor with Shan Masood. The recalled Sarfraz Ahmed will keep wicket after Adnan Akmal had to return home following a fractured finger in the first Test.

Sri Lanka have summoned one-day opener Kusal Perera after Lahiru Thirimanne failed to recover from an ankle injury. They have not sought a replacement for paceman Nuwan Kulasekara, who returned home with a hamstring injury.

Sri Lanka will be counting on the vastly experienced Mahela Jayawardene to come good after he failed in the first Test, managing five and nought.

Spinner Rangana Herath will also look for more rewards after getting just four wickets in Abu Dhabi. And off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake will try to secure his place in the side after getting support from his skipper.

"We all know Sachithra is a good spinner. Playing in his first Test, it was not easy playing on a pitch like this," said Mathews after Senanayake went wicketless in Abu Dhabi.

Mathews, who scored 91 in the first innings before his unbeaten century in the second, was delighted with his own form.

"I was a little bit under pressure and I am happy that I justified my place," he said.

UN sends invitations for Syria peace conference: oficials

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Monday started sending out invitations to a Syria peace conference on January 22, but Iran was not on the first list, a UN spokesman said.

US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on January 13 in a bid to decide on whether Iran should take part, said UN deputy spokesman Farhan Haq.

"Iran was not among the first invitations," Haq said.

"US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will meet on January 13 and we very much hope they will reach agreement on Iran s participation," he added.

It was not known if UN-Arab League envoy Lakhdar Brahimi would be at the January 13 meeting.

Russia has pressed for Iran s participation in the bid to end the 34-month-old conflict.

Ban has also spoken out in favor of Iranian involvement, but the United States and other western nations have opposed a frontline place for Tehran at the meetings in Switzerland.

The January 22 meeting is to help implement a June 2012 Geneva declaration by the major powers, including Russia and the United States, that a transitional government be established in Syria.

The United States has said Iran should not take part in the conference because it has refused to back the Geneva declaration.
